Applying for a bank loan in 1975, Lal Bihari, a farmer in northern India faced this predicament when he learned he was no longer listed among the living. An unscrupulous uncle had bribed a government official to issue a false death certificate, allowing the uncle to take control of Mr. Bihari’s land. Witness his efforts to “rise from the dead” – defying the bureaucracy and corruption that refused to accept his obvious existence – by trying to get arrested, running for Prime Minister, staging his own funeral, and applying for widow's pension for his wife.
